What Is Pain
Pain is a sensation that
hurts & causes discomfort.
Pain is defined as
whatever you, the patient,
defines as pain. Pain
occurs whenever and
wherever you say that it
does. There are two main
types of pain: acute &
chronic.
Pain is a primary symptom in many medical conditions, and
can significantly interfere with a person's quality of life and
overall functioning. Pain is the single most frequent reason for
physician consultation in the United States. (Turk, Dennis C.;
Dworkin, Robert H. (2004)
Everyone experiences pain at one point or another. It often is
an indication that something is wrong. Each individual is the
best judge of his or her own pain. Feelings of pain can range
from mild and occasional to severe and constant.
Acute Pain is a temporary pain that may be severe and is
usually an indication that body tissue has been injured in
some way such as by a surgical procedure, burn, broken
bone or other disease. The pain generally disappears when
the injury heals.
Chronic Pain ranges from mild to severe and may be present
to some degree for entended periods of time. The cause is not
always known. It may be related to certain conditions such as
arthritis, back problems, persistent headaches, cancer or
other problems/ diseases.
Pain management is important for ongoing pain control,
especially if you suffer with long-term or chronic pain. After
getting a pain assessment, your doctor can prescribe pain
medicine or other pain management treatments to help you get
pain relief. Sometimes psychotherapy is also useful in learning
new coping skills to help with chronic pain. Use the pain
management directory to locate a physician to manage your
pain appropriately.
